An incorrect measurement means the cover will not fit, which compromises safety and causes the cover to wear out quickly. You can learn more about the different Types of Pool Covers to decide which is best for you.

For Rectangular Pools

If your pool is a simple rectangle, measure the longest and widest points of the water. Do not include the deck or coping. The manufacturer will make the cover about one foot larger in each direction to provide the necessary overlap for anchoring.

For Freeform Pools

If your pool has curves, you will need to use the A/B triangulation method. This needs to be very precise, so it’s best to have a helper. Most manufacturers provide a specific measurement form or template.

Sketch the pool shape: Draw a rough outline of your pool on paper. This will help you keep track of your measurements.

Set your A/B reference line: Snap a straight chalk line on your deck about 4 to 5 feet from the pool’s edge. This line should run for about two-thirds of the length of the pool, and the two ends of the line, points A and B, need to be at least 10 to 15 feet apart. The most important thing here is that this line must never cross over the water.

Mark and secure points: Mark the ends as A and B. Drive stakes or use some weights to ensure that they won’t move. Measure the exact distance between A and B and write it down.

Mark all the points: Use some chalk to mark numbered points around the inside edge of the pool coping. On straight parts, space the points about 3 feet apart. On tight curves, put them closer together, about 1 to 2 feet apart. You should also mark any spot where a straight edge starts to curve as its own numbered point.

Measure between points: Have one person hold the end of the tape measure at the stake for point A. The other person will walk the tape to each numbered point around the pool. Pull the tape tight and measure the distance from A to each of the numbered points. Write down all these measurements, then do the same thing from point B.

Measure overall length and width: To double-check your work, take 3 or 4 diagonal measurements. Measure the distance between random points on opposite sides of the pool.

Create a detailed sketch for the supplier: Use some graph paper or the form from the cover manufacturer to make a final drawing of your pool. This drawing should include the A/B line, all your numbered points, any obstructions, and the diagonal check of the measurements you took.

Here’s a great YouTube video that explains these steps:

Note: Any non-removable object or equipment, like slide legs, handrails, or decorative rocks, must be included in your measurements. Mark each obstruction as a numbered or lettered point and measure to it from your A and B lines, just as you did for the pool’s edge.

Step 2. Prepare the Pool and Deck

Before you start, inspect your pool deck for any large cracks or unstable areas. Drilling into a compromised surface can cause further damage, so any necessary repairs should be made first. Also, ensure the deck surface is completely dry before you begin drilling.

If installing the cover as part of winterizing your pool, you should prepare the water first. Jeremy Yamaguchi, CEO at Cabana, says, “You definitely want to test the water chemistry before the winter. This is a super important winterizing step.”

For more guidance, you can read our articles on When to Close Your Pool and How to Winterize Your In-Ground Pool.

Step 3. Lay Out and Position the Cover

Unroll the cover and place it over the pool. The bottom side has protective rubber strips on which the straps are sewn.

Center the cover so it has an equal amount of overlap on all sides. This is usually about one foot. Once it is in the perfect spot, use some full buckets of water to hold the straps down temporarily.

With the cover perfectly positioned, use chalk to mark the location for each anchor on the deck, in line with each strap, so that you can drill in the exact right spots.

Step 4. Install the Deck Anchors

This is the hardest part of the job. Using the right anchor for your deck material is critical for safety. The most common anchors are the screw-type, which sit flush in the deck when not in use. Another option is the pop-up anchor, which raises with a half turn.

Before drilling, check for any hidden utilities, pipes, or joists beneath the deck surface to avoid damage.

For Concrete Decks

Start with a strap near the center of the pool. Anchor points should be spaced 3 to 4 feet apart and located about 16 to 20 inches from the cover’s edge.

Use a hammer drill with the correct size masonry bit to drill a hole 1 5/8 to 2 1/4 inches deep. You can wrap tape around the drill bit to mark the proper depth.

Clean all the dust out of the hole with a shop vacuum.

Put the brass anchor in the hole. Use a tamping tool and a hammer to tap it down until it is flush with the deck.

For Paver Decks

If your pavers are set in mortar, it is best to drill at a joint where three pavers meet to avoid cracking them. A wet core drill is better than a hammer drill because it creates less vibration.

If your pavers are on a sand or gravel base, you must use a long anchor pipe (lawn tube). Drill through the paver and into the ground below. Hammer the pipe sleeve into the hole until it is flush with the paver. Then, insert the brass anchor into the top of the pipe.

For Wood Decks

You will need a special wood deck anchor with a flange:

Use a Forstner bit to drill a shallow, flat-bottomed hole so the anchor’s flange will sit flush with the wood.

Drill a 3/4 inch hole through the center of that spot.

Drop the anchor in and secure it with the screws.

Step 5. Attach and Tension the Cover

Tensioned pool cover installed. A. / Adobe Stock

You should attach the straps in a specific order to get even tension. The most common method is to start from the center and work your way out.

Start in the middle: Attach the springs for the longest strap running the length of the pool, then attach the ones for the one running the width of the pool. Attach the springs for the longest strap running the pool width to set the main tension.

Attach the springs: Feed the strap through the adjustment buckle and the square end of the spring.

Use the installation rod: Raise the brass anchor screw about 3/8 of an inch. Put the tip of the installation rod through the round end of the spring. Place the rod’s notch over the anchor screw and lean the rod away from the pool. This will stretch the spring so you can slide it over the anchor.

Work your way out: After the center straps are secure, continue attaching straps, alternating from side to side and end to end as you move toward the corners.

Get the right tension: The springs should be compressed by about 50% to 75% max. The cover will stretch a little over the first couple of years, so it’s important to get the initial tension set right.

FAQ About Installing a Pool Cover on Your In-Ground Pool

Can you put an in-ground pool cover on by yourself?
One person can put on a cover after the anchors are installed, but it’s a tough job. This happens only with lightweight tarp covers that use water bags. If a safety cover is loose, the straps need to be tightened.

Do you need to put a pillow under your pool cover?
No, an air pillow is unnecessary for an anchored safety cover on an in-ground pool. The tension from the straps and springs keeps the cover tight.

How can you keep the pool cover from sagging?
Sagging happens if the strap tension is too loose, the material has stretched over time, or the pool water level is too low. You can fix this by tightening the straps or by removing any heavy debris and water with a cover pump.

Can you cover an empty swimming pool?
You should not keep an in-ground pool empty for a long time.
