This article details how long it will take to mount a TV on a wall. Mounting a TV usually takes 30 minutes to one and a half hours. Factors like the type of wall, size of the TV, and whether you’re concealing wires can all impact the time required.
Mounting Location Matters
On Regular Drywall
Mounting a TV on regular drywall is usually quick and straightforward. All you need to do is have all the required tools handy and choose the place to mount.
Our article, ‘How Much Weight Can Drywall Hold?’, can help you prepare to install a heavy TV.
- Without Wire Concealing: 30 to 40 minutes
- With Wire Concealing: 40 to 55 minutes
On Brick or Stone

This type of wall requires more time than regular drywall due to the need for special tools to drill into the material. Drilling into brick or stone requires masonry drill bits and possibly a hammer drill, which can add extra time compared to regular drywall installations.
- Without Wire Concealing: 30 to 40 minutes
- With Wire Concealing: 50 minutes to 1 hour
Concealing wires on brick or stone takes longer because it’s difficult to run wires through the hard surface. Surface-mounted cable channels are usually the best option to keep cables organized and out of sight.
My Tip:
My TV is mounted on a brick wall. Hiding wires inside the wall is time-consuming and expensive. To keep things neat and save money, I made all the TV wires into a bunch, tied them, and placed them behind the books on a nearby bookshelf.

Above a Fireplace

In our article “Where to Mount a TV on the Wall,” we recommend not to mount your TV above a fireplace. But if that’s the only option, you have to search for a position where the temperature does not exceed 104°F while the fireplace is in use.
We recommend lighting a fire and measuring the temperature above before proceeding with the installation, which can add considerable time to the process.
- Without Framing (Wire Concealing Usually Not Needed): 40 – 45 minutes
Since the wall behind a fireplace is usually a chimney, it may not be possible to conceal your TV wires in the wall. You can use cable concealers, also known as cord channels, to keep your cables neat and out of sight.
Outdoors
Outdoor installations vary depending on the surface material and environment. Outdoor conditions like uneven surfaces or weather elements may slow the installation.
- Without Wire Concealing: 30 to 40 minutes
- With Wire Concealing: 1 hour to 1½ hours
Concealing wires outdoors can be tricky due to exposure to weather and the need for durable, weather-resistant solutions. You’ll likely need to use outdoor-rated cable channels or conduits to protect your wires from moisture and extreme temperatures.
Commercial Location or Business

Mounting a TV in a commercial setting can be more time-consuming than any other, as it often involves higher installation points. For example, you might see TVs mounted higher in airports, food takeaway points, or waiting areas to ensure visibility.
- Without Wire Concealing: 40 to 55 minutes (depending on surface, height, and type of TV mount)
- With Wire Concealing: 1 hour to 1½ hours
In commercial settings, safety and aesthetics are important. Mounts need to be secure to handle busy areas with high foot traffic. Concealing wires takes extra time, as cables need to be routed through walls or ceiling conduits for a clean look.
Factors that Affect Time

TV Size
Larger flatscreen TVs take more time to mount, especially if you need help lifting them. Before mounting, it is important to measure the TV size and wall space to ensure the mount is compatible. However, the difference isn’t huge, maybe an extra 10-15 minutes.
Mount Type
The type of mount you choose can make a difference. A simple fixed mount is faster to install than a more complex one, like a full-motion mount. This might add an extra 20-30 minutes.

Does It Help to Have Multiple People?
Yes, it helps. An extra pair of hands can make the process faster, especially for larger TVs. One person can hold the TV while the other attaches the mount. This can save an additional 10-20 minutes from the overall time.
My Tip:
Whenever I do DIY on heavy and expensive things, I always ask for a helping hand. In most of the cases, my dad or sister helps me. More than time, an extra pair of helpings helps make the installation process easy and safe.
