How to Mount a TV on the Wall

When I bought a TV online, the DIY guide sent by the manufacturer was unclear. I even checked their website for clear information to no avail. Fortunately, with my cousin’s help, I learned about the mounting process in detail.

This article will walk you through the steps to mount your TV on the wall.

Things to Check Before You Start

Type of TV Mount

There are various types of mounts available, each offering different features. For instance, if you want to mount your TV in a corner, only a full-motion mount is suitable.

Where to Mount

The ideal spot to mount your TV depends on factors like room size, viewing angle, and size. For more detailed guidance on selecting the perfect location, visit our article “Where to mount a TV on the wall.”

Tool Checklist

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary tools. Missing even one tool during the process can cause delays or even damage. For a comprehensive list, refer to our article “All the Tools Needed to Mount a TV.”

Once you’ve confirmed everything on the checklist, install the brackets on the back of your TV to ensure they fit correctly. Next, measure the distance from the bottom of your TV to the bottom of the wall plate. This measurement will help you position the mount at the right height on the wall.

Locating the Studs

Use a stud finder to locate the studs in your wall at the height you want the TV. Slowly move the stud finder horizontally across the wall until it indicates the edge of a stud. Mark this spot with a pencil. Continue moving the stud finder to find the other edge of the stud and mark that as well.

Marking and Drilling Pilot Holes

Once you’ve identified the center of each stud, mark the spots where you’ll drill pilot holes for your mounting screws. Ensure that these holes are centered on the studs. The pilot holes should be smaller in diameter than the bolts you’ll use to attach the mount. When drilling, take proper safety precautions by wearing gloves, eye protection, and a mask.

Finally, fix the mounting plate over the holes.

Attaching the TV Mount

Position the mount against the wall, aligning it with your drilled pilot holes. Using a suitable wrench, begin driving the bolts into the wall. Before fully tightening them, make sure the mount is level. If everything looks good, finish tightening the bolts securely.

It’s best to have someone help you with this step. With your helper, carefully lift the TV and align the mounting brackets on the back of the TV with the wall plate. Once the TV is on the wall, use a leveling tool to ensure it’s straight. If necessary, make minor adjustments to get it perfectly level.

Once your TV is mounted, consider enhancing the look of your space by hiding the wires.
