How to Measure a TV for a Wall Mount

To find the right wall mount, you need to measure the VESA mounting pattern and ensure the mount can handle your TV’s weight.

This article will help you to pick the right and compatible mount.

Measure the TV’s VESA Pattern

Before purchasing a mount for your TV, you need to know your TV’s VESA mounting pattern to get the correct mount.

VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association. The VESA standard refers to the four-hole pattern on the back of your TV and the screws that fit into those holes.

Look at the back of your TV, which has four screw holes—two at the top and two at the bottom. Most mounting patterns are square or rectangular.

You can usually find your TV’s VESA standard size in the user manual provided by the company or on the manufacturer’s website using the model number.

If you want to measure it yourself:

  1. Look for four threaded holes in the back of your TV.
  2. Use a tape measure to measure the horizontal distance first, followed by the vertical distance between the holes. Keep the measurements in millimeters.

For example, if the distance between your TV’s mounting holes measures 200mm across by 200mm high, your VESA size is 200×200.

Now that you have your TV’s VESA pattern, make sure the mount you buy matches this.

Tip:

Be careful with the TV screen if you’re measuring the VESA pattern yourself. When you turn it over, place a cloth underneath the screen to prevent any chance of scratches.

Measure the TV’s Weight

The wall mount supports most of the TV’s weight when mounted on the wall. So it’s important to choose a mount that supports the weight of your TV. In general, the weight of the TV is listed in the user manual. You can find it on the manufacturer’s website by searching with the model number.

Once you have your TV’s VESA pattern and weight, you’ll be able to choose the model and type of wall mount that fits your needs.

If you haven’t purchased your TV yet, you may need to measure your space to ensure the model you buy isn’t too large for the selected wall. TVs are sized in inches referring to the diagonal span of the screen.

For example, a 50” TV is 50 inches from corner to corner. The actual width of a 50-inch TV varies from model to model but tends to be around 43 inches.

Measure the height and width of the space where you want to mount your TV. Ensure a few extra inches of space on all sides to prevent overheating, even if you’re placing the TV in a cabinet or on furniture. This will make it easier to remove or move the TV if needed.

Editor’s Note: Since you want to leave space on the sides, a good rule to follow is to match the TV’s diagonal width to the amount of available horizontal space on your wall. When centered, this will leave 2-3 inches on either side of the TV.

Make sure to write down all your measurements, as they will help you to calculate the best viewing distance and how high to mount your TV

When to Hire a Pro

Even with proper measurements, the job of mounting a TV isn’t always simple. From locating the studs to setting the height and getting it perfectly level, a pro can put your TV on the wall faster and with less hassle than the average DIYer.
