In my teenage years, when we bought a new TV online, we did not get a mount in the box. Eager to start watching, I searched Google for a TV mount and asked my father to order the first one that popped up. He said, “Not every TV is compatible with every wall mount.”
Are TV mounts universal? The short answer is no. Not all TVs can be mounted with any wall mount. This guide will walk you through the factors you need to look out for when choosing a TV mount.
Choosing the Right Wall Mount for Your TV
VESA Pattern:
VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association. It’s an international standard that defines the spacing between the mounting holes on the back of the TV. These holes are where the wall mount will attach to your TV.
If your TV has a VESA pattern of 200x200mm, this means the mounting holes are 200mm apart horizontally and 200mm apart vertically. It would be best to ensure that the wall mount you choose supports this pattern.
Weight Capacity:
The weight capacity of a wall mount indicates the maximum weight it can support without any risk. If your TV weighs 50 pounds, choose a mount that supports at least 50 pounds.
Always check whether the mount manufacturer’s specifications meet your TV’s weight.
TV Size Range:
The TV size range means a range of screen sizes a mount can accommodate. If your TV is 55 inches, you’ll want to select a mount that supports TVs within the range of 42 to 70 inches.
TVs That Don’t Fit Universal Mounts
Certain TVs, such as Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) models, are incompatible even with “universal” mounts. Compared to modern flat-screen TVs, CRT televisions have a bulky structure, which is unsuitable for wall mounting. They lack a flat back and standardized mounting holes, so they are generally placed directly on furniture.
