When asked about the common challenges a DIYer might face when installing a range hood, mechanical engineer Colin Young explains, “Getting the hood to fit will be a challenge. Normally, the sizing will be close to exact, so preparation of where the hood will be mounted is key. Lifting the range hood into place and securing it is definitely a two-person job, so this might be a challenge for some.”

In addition, installing a ducted range hood is challenging since it requires cutting through walls or ceilings to create a path for the ductwork. Mr. Young added, “If ventilation is installed outside, there can be many obstacles from the range to the roof/exterior wall. This hole drilling can be a complicated process that encounters both plumbing and electrical wires. This is probably best left to a professional for most DIYers, but it can be done.”

You also need to connect and secure the ducting to the hood and the exterior vent. Meanwhile, installing a ductless range hood is easier since it doesn’t involve complex venting or major modifications.

Basic Skills Needed When Installing a Range Hood

If you have been doing household maintenance for a long time, installing a range hood should be easy. It helps to have basic knowledge of electrical wiring and connections since you will need to connect this kitchen appliance to the power source.

You need carpentry skills, especially when installing a ducted range hood that requires cutting holes for venting. Familiarity with using drills, saws, and other tools to cut through drywall or cabinetry is also a big plus. However, you should hire or consult an HVAC professional or electrician if the installation requires new ductwork and electrical wiring.

Importance of Proper Installation

Improper installation can lead to serious safety hazards, including short circuits or fire for poor electrical connections. For example, connecting to a smaller duct can result in reduced performance and overheating, potentially leading to mechanical failure. Incorrect venting can result in poor air circulation, causing grease, smoke, and dirt to accumulate in your kitchen.

Time Considerations

If you do it yourself, the installation should take two to four hours if you install a ductless range hood or if your home already has a ducted system. If the installation includes ductwork or electrical work, I recommend finding a professional to do the job, even if you will spend more.

Installing a ductless range hood is much easier than installing a vented one since it does need a venting system, making the installation smooth and easy. But before the installation process, you need to have an electric outlet dedicated to using this kitchen appliance. You can also refer to the installation manual for added assistance.

What You’ll Need:

  • Range hood
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Jigsaw

Step 1: Prepare the Installation Area

Start by taking all the necessary measurements to fit and align the range hood. Use a tape measure to locate the center of the wall where the range hood will be installed.

You must measure from the top of the chimney bracket. Then, draw a vertical line at the center for drilling and mounting purposes. Remember that the recommended distance from the cooktop to the range hood is 26 to 36 inches.

Step 2: Map the Bracket Holes

The next step is to plan where you will drill the mounting holes. The easiest method is to create a paper template by tracing the back of the range hood. Use this template to mark the exact spots where you must drill on the wall. You must ensure accurate placement so the hood sits level and securely.

Step 3: Drill the Pilot Holes and Install the Brackets

Once you mark the location, drill pilot holes for the screws. Depending on your wall type, you may need to use wall anchors for added stability. Then, insert the screws partly to leave enough space to hang the range hood. After ensuring that the brackets are level, tighten the screws securely.

Step 4: Mount the Range Hood

Hold the range hood and align it with the mounting screws. Hook the hood onto the screws and ensure it sits against the wall. Once it is in place, you can now fully tighten the screws to secure the range hood.

Step 5: Connect the Power Supply and Testing the Range Hood

With the hood mounted, you can now connect the hood to the electrical power supply. For most models, this involves simply plugging it into a nearby outlet. However, if your range hood requires hardwiring, you may need to consult a professional electrician.

After connecting, you can turn on the hood and test the fan and lights. Check that the hood runs smoothly and the air recirculates properly through the filters.

Installing Under-Cabinet Ductless Range Hood

Installing a ductless under-cabinet range hood has the same installation process. The only difference is the location since you mount it beneath the top kitchen cabinet.

The installation includes securing the range hood directly below the cabinet. You must carefully map and drill the bracket holes within the cabinet, ensuring an accurate placement.

Installing Microwave Hood Combinations

A microwave hood combination has the same installation process as a conventional wall-mounted ductless range hood. The difference lies in the mounting process, which combines the microwave and the venting unit above your cooktop.

You will use a specialized mounting bracket to secure the microwave while ensuring the range hood is properly aligned above the cooktop.

Experienced DIYers can install a vented range hood in the wall with the right tools and materials. Since the installation differs by brand, make sure to read your range hood’s manufacturer’s instructions before starting. Please take time with each step for your safety and efficiency during the installation process.

What You’ll Need:

  • Range Hood
  • Drill and Drill Bits
  • Caulk
  • Caulk Gun
  • Wall Cap
  • Wire Stripper
  • Foil Tape
  • Oscillating Tool
  • Duct

Step 1: Prepare the Installation Area

Measure the range hood to identify the location of the vent. Mark the spot on the wall where the vent will exit, including the positions of the mounting screws and the vent hole.

Important Reminders:

A range hood should be installed 26 to 36 inches (66 to 91 cm) above the cooking surface. This height ensures that smoke and fumes are effectively captured and removed from your home.

In addition, it is essential to determine the right location for your ductwork to ensure it has a clear path to the exterior of your house. The area selected must be free from electrical wiring, large studs, or any other obstacles.

The chosen route should be unobstructed and have the shortest distance to the outside from the kitchen. If you discover plumbing or electrical lines behind the wall, consult a professional.

Step 2: Cut the Vent Hole and Install the Duct Work

Cut the opening in the wall where the ductwork will pass through the house’s exterior. Then, connect the ductwork to the range hood and guide it through the opening, ensuring it rubs smoothly to the side. Finally, ensure the duct is securely attached and properly sealed to prevent leaks.

This complicated process is detailed in the following articles:

Step 3: Mount the Range Hood

For this next step, you will need someone to help you in putting the new range hood on the wall. With the help of an assistant, position the hood in the installation area. Use your hands to align the ductwork at the back and ensure it fits against the wall.

Once you center it, mark the holes to know exactly where to mount the range hood. After marking, drill the holes and then use the screws to mount the hood to the wall. Make sure that it is level before fully tightening the screws.

Step 4: Connect the Electrical Wiring

Before doing this step, you need to turn off the power of the circuit breaker for safety. Connect the range hood’s wires to your home’s electrical wiring by connecting black to black (hot wire), white to white (neutral wire), and green to green or bare copper (ground wire).

Once all connections are made, tuck the wires into the electrical box or hood’s wiring compartment and secure the cover.

Step 5: Test the Newly Installed Range Hood

After the installation, turn the power back on the circuit breaker. Test the range hood by turning on the fan and the lights. Make sure the fan vents air outside correctly.

For some finishing touches, use the caulk and the caulk gun to seal any gaps around the vent cap or where the ductwork meets the wall. Then, remove any debris to keep the newly installed range hood and the area clean.

Installing an Under-Cabinet Vented Range Hood

Installing an under-cabinet range hood is the same as installing a wall-mounted vented range hood. The differences are in the mounting location and the need to work within the confines of the existing kitchen cabinet for ventilation.

The installation process includes securing the range hood beneath the cabinet while ensuring proper alignment with the ductwork. It begins by determining the best location for the venting hole. Typically, you cut the hole at the back of the cabinet.

The duct path should be as short and direct as possible to ensure efficient airflow. Once you select the hole location, route the ductwork through the cabinetry and out to the exterior of your home.

Installing an Island Vented Range Hood

Installing an island vented range hood is more complicated due to its unique location in the kitchen and the need to mount it in the ceiling. The installation includes proper measurements to determine the correct height and the positioning of the hood above the kitchen island.

Then, you must properly mount the range hood to the ceiling, which may require adding extra support. You can install extra framing to provide a strong anchor point for the hood if the ceiling is unable to handle the added weight.

The venting installation involves routing the ductwork from the range hood to the ceiling and out to the exterior of your home. This process will require you to cut a hole in the ceiling for the deduct work and ensure it aligns perfectly with the hood.

Installing a Downdraft Vented Range Hood

Installing a downdraft vented range hood is different because you must install it directly into the countertop or cooktop. During the installation, you will need to cut a precise opening in the countertop to position the hood and secure it in the installation area.

Installing these range hoods will require you to consider the space below the countertop to accommodate its housing and motor. You will also be required to cut holes into the cabinet to ensure efficient airflow.
