How to Install a Curtain Rod on Your Wall

Learning how to install a curtain rod on your wall is simpler than you might think. All you need is the right tools and a clear step-by-step approach. The process involves choosing the right rod, measuring carefully and marking the placements, drilling guide holes, and securely mounting the brackets.

Especially if you’re a first-timer, this guide — packed with tips from my uncle, a seasoned handyman — will help you install your curtain rod with confidence.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Step 1: Choose the Right Curtain Rod Type

Before installation, select a rod type that complements your curtains and the room’s needs:

  • Classic Rods: Adjustable and versatile, with decorative finials on each end.
  • Double Rods: Ideal for layering a sheer curtain with a heavier drape, perfect for balancing light and privacy.
  • Return Rods: Feature a U-shape that wraps around the window and fully blocks out light for maximum privacy and insulation.

Step 2: Measure and Mark the Placement of the Brackets

Start by measuring where you want the brackets to go: one on the left, one in the middle (if your curtain rod is more than four feet), and one on the right.

Measure the width of the window and mark 3 inches beyond each side to allow the curtains to fully cover the frame. Height can vary, but positioning brackets about 4 inches above the window frame is a good starting point. Mark these points with a pencil.

Important: Proper placement will ensure that the rod is evenly supported across its length.

Pro Tip: If your curtains are longer or ceilings are low, adjust the height slightly to achieve the ideal look.

Bonus Tip: The “Rod on the Floor” Trick

For a flawless setup, my handyman uncle’s got the perfect trick: the “rod on the floor” method. Just lay the curtain rod flat on the floor and measure where the brackets should sit before drilling.

It’s a great way to get a level view of the setup and ensure everything lines up perfectly so that you have no hanging doubts.

Step 3: Drill Holes for the Brackets

Using your drill, make small starter or guide holes (just about the size of a toothpick, according to my uncle) where you marked the bracket locations. This will allow you to insert the wall anchors smoothly.

Step 4: Insert Wall Anchors

Wall anchors are essential for a secure hold, especially on drywall. Place the anchors into the drilled holes, then use a hammer to gently tap them in until they’re flush with the wall.

Important: Make sure the holes are large enough for the anchors to fit but snug enough to provide a secure grip.

Hanging a Lighter Curtain?

You can skip the heavy-duty stuff and go for plastic wall anchors. My uncle swears by them for lightweight curtains — they’re just as sturdy but gentler on your walls.

Plus, when it’s time to switch things up or move your curtain rod, plastic anchors make the job a lot easier and save you from unnecessary damage.

Step 5: Partially Screw in the Brackets

Take the screws provided with the curtain rod and screw them into the wall anchors, but don’t tighten them fully yet. Leave a little room so you can easily attach the holders.

Step 6: Fasten the Brackets Securely

Place the holders over the partially tightened screws, then tighten the screws fully to secure each bracket. This step ensures that the brackets will stay in place without moving.

Pro Tip: For rods longer than 4 feet, add a center bracket to avoid sagging. Simply measure between the side brackets and mark the center for extra support.

Step 7: Prepare the Curtain Rod

For double rods, hang sheer curtains or blackout liners on the thinner, secondary rod before adding the main curtains to the primary rod.

For single rods, simply thread the main curtain. If curtain rings are included, attach them to the rod before placing the curtains.

Step 8: Hang the Curtains and Secure the Rod

Slide the curtains onto the rod, then position the rod onto the holders. Some brackets are designed for the rod to rest on top, while others require screws to secure it in place. Tighten these screws, if provided, to keep the rod from shifting.

Pro Tip: Give the rod a gentle pull to confirm that it’s secure and won’t move.

Step 9: Final Check

Open and close the curtains a few times to ensure the rod and brackets are stable. Inspect all fastenings to confirm they’re secure and ready to hold up over time.
