Need to repair and fill a hole in a brick wall? You’ll need mortar repair sealant to fill the hole and cover the surface with brick dust to patch the hole.
Brick walls are common in exterior areas because they are durable and can withstand harsh conditions such as heavy rain and heat. Over time, the brick can change color, which can be difficult to replicate as you repair the hole.
On the other hand, if you’ve mounted outdoor lighting or a wall fixture on your brick wall using a wall plug or anchor, you can still patch the hole on your wall. In this article, we’ll discuss how to fill a small hole in a brick wall using mortar repair sealant and brick dust to match the wall’s color.
| Project difficulty: Intermediate Estimated time to complete: 25 to 30 mins Drying time: Varies depending on the mortar repair sealant Project cost: ~$20 |

What You’ll Need
- Screw
- Screwdriver
- Hammer
- Large drill bit
- Power drill
- Plastic container
- Mortar repair sealant
- Trowel
- 2 sponges
Safety Tip: Use a ladder to reach higher areas on your brick wall. Wear a dust mask to protect yourself from dust and debris.
Before You Begin: Ensure the brick is dry before beginning this project. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and debris from the wall.
Step 1: Prepare the Hole
If a wall plug is still inside the hole in the brick wall, insert a screw into the wall plug and slightly drive it into the wall with a screwdriver. Do not insert the screw completely into the brick wall to prevent the wall plug from expanding inside the wall.
Hit the head of the screw to drive the wall plug deeper into the wall. Remove the screw from the wall plug with a screwdriver. The wall plug should be completely hidden inside the hole afterward.
Step 2: Collect Dust from the Brick

With a drill bit larger than the hole, slightly drill into the wall to gather dust from the brick you’ll be patching. Collect the dust in a plastic container. You’ll use this dust to match the surface of the filled hole to the brick’s color in Step 4.
Step 3: Apply Mortar Repair Sealant

Push the mortar repair sealant as far into the hole as possible. Flatten the excess mortar repair sealant with a trowel before applying another layer. Repeat this process until the hole is filled. Then, press a damp sponge on the filled hole to match the brick’s texture.
Step 4: Cover the Surface with Brick Dust
Dip a dry sponge into the plastic container with the brick dust. Pat the sponge on the filled hole and the surrounding area to add color. Continue applying the brick dust until you’ve fully coated the hole with dust.
Do not worry if the color appears lighter than the rest of the brick. After the sealant has dried, the color of the filled hole will eventually match the brick once it has cured.
