12 Different Types of Shower Heads

There are different types of shower heads, from soothing rainfall models to smart options with voice control and music. Whether you want better water pressure or a stylish upgrade, there’s an option to fit your aesthetic and budget.

Selecting the right type of shower head for your bathroom can make your daily routine more comfortable and efficient. For example, I suggest a handheld shower head for families with small children or pets. However, you can pair this type with a rain shower head for a more sophisticated setup.

While many are easy to install yourself, more complex models, like body spray panels, require professional installation. Home Gnome can connect you with a local plumber for help.

1. Fixed or Wall Mounted

Installation: DIY
Main Characteristic: Basic, traditional style
Cost: $9 to $145

A fixed or wall-mounted shower head is one of the most popular types of shower heads. It’s attached to the wall and provides steady water flow and pressure. These shower heads are available in a variety of styles to fit your bathroom’s aesthetic, such as modern, vintage, or minimalist, and they also come in a wide range of colors.

Fixed showerheads are designed for easy maintenance. Many models feature self-cleaning nozzles that reduce mineral buildup, helping ensure steady performance and a longer lifespan.

My Tip: Since the height of the shower head is fixed, it works best if you live alone or with other adults who are around the same height.

2. Body Spray

Installation: Professional installation recommended
Main Characteristic: Flat panels that spray water horizontally
Cost: $85 to $804

Body spray shower heads are a luxurious option found in high-end homes. It’s a flat panel with several small nozzles installed on the shower wall. These nozzles spray water horizontally, giving you a spa-like experience.

I recommend this option if you’re looking for a shower that mimics a massage or hydrotherapy. It’s a great choice for anyone who needs to unwind and add extra relaxation to their daily routine.

3. Handheld

Installation: DIY
Main Characteristic: Can be removed from the wall and used by hand
Cost: $7 to $1,643

Handheld shower heads are all about flexibility and convenience. The shower head is attached to a 4- to 6-foot hose, so you can leave it on its mount or remove it to use as a hand shower.

Another popular type of shower head among homeowners, handheld models come in a variety of styles and colors to match your bathroom’s aesthetic. They typically have settings where you can control the water pressure, from a mist to a powerful stream.

My Tip: Handheld models are perfect for families with kids. In our spare bathroom, we have a handheld option that makes bath time quick and easy. They’re also great for washing pets or for people with mobility concerns.

4. Sliding Bar

Installation: DIY
Main Characteristic: Attached to a bar mounted on the wall that adjusts the shower head’s height
Cost: $30 to $635

Sliding bar shower heads are exactly what the name suggests. They’re handheld shower heads attached to a bar mounted vertically on the wall, which allows you to adjust the shower head’s height.

These types of shower heads are perfect for families with people of different heights, as everyone can set it to their preferred level for a comfortable shower.

My Tip: Sliding bar shower heads offer even more versatility than their handheld counterparts since they combine the technology of the two. Consider this option if you have kids and pets.

5. Dual

Installation: DIY
Main Characteristic: Consists of both fixed and handheld options
Cost: $19 to $1,143

Dual shower heads have both fixed and handheld models, offering the ultimate flexibility and convenience in one setup. With two heads connected to the same arm or a diverter valve, you can switch between them or, in some systems, use both at the same time.

This is the type of shower I have in my bathrooms, and as a mom of a baby and a toddler, I find it incredibly helpful. The fixed shower head is perfect for adults, while the handheld option is a lifesaver for family use. I use it to fill the baby tub, and it’s great for helping my toddler learn to shower comfortably without feeling overwhelmed.

My Tip: You can run both options at once, but keep in mind that it will increase your water use and decrease your water pressure. If you prefer a stronger flow of water, only use one option at a time.

6. Rain

Installation: Professional installation recommended
Main Characteristic: Mimics a gentle rainshower
Cost: $50 to $500

Rain shower heads are designed to give you the relaxing feeling of standing in a gentle rain. This type of shower head is usually mounted on the ceiling or the wall with an extension arm, allowing water to gently flow straight down over you.

I love that this type of shower head is sleek and modern, and installing a rainfall model can instantly make your bathroom feel more luxurious. I’ve used one before, and it really makes your shower feel like a spa day.

7. Filtered

Installation: DIY
Main Characteristic: Water filter removes impurities
Cost: $25 to $1,175

Filtered shower heads come with a built-in filter to remove impurities like chlorine, minerals, and sediments from your water.

My water is very hard, to the point where my shampoo doesn’t lather properly, and my skin always feels dry and tight after a shower. Everything changed when I switched to a filtered shower head. My skin became softer, and my hair looked better. I also saved money because I didn’t need to use as much soap or shampoo.

My Tip: To keep your filtered shower head working properly, replace the filter every six months. This helps maintain water quality and ensures good performance.

8. Low-Flow

Installation: DIY
Main Characteristic: Conserves water
Cost: $5 to $55

Low-flow shower heads, also known as water-efficient shower heads, are designed to use less water. These shower heads are the perfect solution if you’re looking for an eco-friendly option that will also help lower your water bills.

That said, you might feel a little annoyed when first using these types of shower heads. Low-flow models can take some time getting used to since they drastically reduce water flow.

My Tip: If you have long, thick hair, choose another type of shower head for your bathroom. These will take much longer to rinse the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair.

9. High-Pressure

Installation: DIY
Main Characteristic: Strong and invigorating
Cost: $30 to $65

High-pressure shower heads are great if you prefer a strong, invigorating shower. They boost your shower’s water flow, making it easier to rinse away soap and shampoo quickly. This makes them great for people who are in a hurry and want a quick shower.

To get the best performance from a high-pressure shower head, it’s important to choose one that works well with your home’s plumbing. Some models require a minimum pressure level to function properly, so checking this beforehand can help avoid issues after installation.

My Tip: If you’re unsure whether your plumbing system can support a high-pressure shower head, Home Gnome can connect you with a local plumber to assess your setup and handle the installation.

10. Outdoor

Main Characteristic: Made to withstand the elements
Cost: $22 to $1,188

Outdoor shower heads are commonly found by pools, near garages, or at beach homes to wash away sand and dirt. They are built with durable materials like stainless steel, brass, or sturdy plastic that resist rust, corrosion, and UV damage.

These types of shower heads come in a variety of styles, blending functionality with aesthetics. Personally, I love the appearance of polished brass gold, because it adds a touch of elegance to any outdoor space.

My Tip: While these often come in fixed options, add a handheld model to your outdoor space for even more added convenience. This is especially helpful if you have kids or wash your dog outdoors.

11. Waterfall

Installation: Professional installation recommended
Main Characteristic: Water pours over a ledge
Cost: $130 to $304

Waterfall shower heads create a unique experience by pouring water over a ledge, mimicking the feel of a natural waterfall. Unlike regular shower heads, they don’t spray water out through small holes.

While these types of shower heads offer a luxurious, high-end appearance, they’re not the best for people with long, thick hair because they have such low water pressure.

My Tip: Be mindful that these shower heads will use more water than standard types, which will increase your water bill.

12. Smart

Installation: Professional Installation needed
Main Characteristic: Smart features like lights, sounds, and voice control
Cost: $311 to $849

Smart shower heads are the newest innovation in shower technology. They offer intelligent features such as voice control, temperature adjustment, and custom settings that can be controlled from a smartphone app. Some also include extra features like built-in speakers for music and LED lighting.

While they’re perfect for anyone looking for a personalized, modern shower, smart shower heads are a little too much for me. I prefer simpler, family-friendly options. If that resonates with you, I recommend exploring other types of shower heads.
