Why Mold Grows in Bathrooms

Bathrooms often provide the ideal conditions for mold to grow and thrive. By looking for these mold-friendly conditions in your bathroom, you can take effective steps to stop mold before it grows:
- High humidity from showers and baths.
- Persistent moisture that clings to tile and other surfaces.
- Poor air circulation, which prevents moisture from drying up.
- Warm temperatures, which mold likes.
- Hidden areas where mold can grow unnoticed.
Strategies to Prevent Bathroom Mold
Preventing mold in your bathroom doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With these strategies, you can maintain a clean, healthy, and mold-free bathroom. From simple daily habits to smart product choices, these tips will help you keep mold at bay and ensure your bathroom remains a fungi-free haven.
Improve Ventilation
Good airflow is essential to stopping mold in the bathroom. It helps dry out the room and makes it harder for mold to grow. Here are some easy ways to improve the ventilation in your bathroom:
- Use the exhaust fan: Turn it on before you shower or bathe, and leave it running. This will remove the damp air.
- Keep the fan on longer: After you’re done, let the fan run for about 30 minutes to remove any leftover moisture in the air.
- Open the windows: When possible, let fresh air in by opening the window slightly. This works well along with the exhaust fan. If you don’t have a window, keep the door open when the bathroom is not in use.
- Clean your fan and vents: Make sure to clean these regularly. When they’re dirty, they don’t work as well at moving the air.
Control Moisture
Keeping your bathroom dry is necessary to stop mold. “The areas most susceptible to mold are any places where the humidity is elevated,” Reid explains.
Here are a few things you can do regularly to control moisture in your bathroom:
- Use a squeegee on shower walls to remove extra water.
- Spread shower curtains out after use so they can dry.
- Dry sinks, tubs, and other wet areas with a soft, absorbent cloth to remove water.
- Use a humidity meter, aka hygrometer, to check moisture levels, with a goal of keeping your bathroom humidity under 50 percent.
- Add a smart dehumidifier that can be controlled via your phone and automatically adjusts based on humidity levels.
- Use moisture-sensing bathroom fans that activate automatically during showers.
Clean Regularly
Routine bathroom cleaning goes without saying, but there are extra steps you can add to your cleaning routine to help keep your bathroom mold-free:
- Use mold-fighting cleaners to kill any mold trying to grow.
- Check the tricky spots, like grout, corners, and small crevices where mold can hide.
- Wash your bathroom rugs often, as they can hold moisture and become mold hotspots.
- Use a vinegar solution of equal parts water and white vinegar for a natural mold deterrent.

Address Leaks
Water leaks are a big problem for mold growth. It’s important to fix leaks quickly to prevent mold and water damage. Here’s how to keep your bathroom free from leaks and mold:
- Regularly check for water damage or leaks in your pipes, faucets, and ceilings. “Anywhere a water intrusion can occur (windows, doors, broken pipes, etc.)” can lead to a mold problem, Reid notes.
- Listen for drips that could suggest a hidden leak.
- Act fast and fix even small leaks immediately to prevent mold and more costly repairs.
- Use leak detectors to alert you if a leak develops.
- Hire a pro if you aren’t able to fix a leak yourself.

Use Mold-Resistant Materials

Simple changes, like using mold-resistant products in your bathroom, can make a big difference in keeping it fresh and mold-free. Here are some mold-fighting options for your bathroom:
- Swap out your old shower curtain for a mold-resistant one.
- Pick mold-resistant paint for your walls and ceiling during your next bathroom remodel.
- Apply mold-resistant caulk in the nooks and crannies where water likes to hide.

Store Items Properly
A clutter-free bathroom reduces the places where moisture can settle. By keeping your sinks and bathing areas clear, you can reduce the risk of mold growing. Here are a few tips to keep a tidy, dry bathroom:
- Store toiletries away from splash-prone areas.
- Ensure towels and bathmats are allowed to air out and dry.
- Remove damp items, like clothes.
Perform Regular Maintenance

Taking care of your bathroom’s regular wear and tear can prevent mold from growing in hard-to-reach places. Here are some things you can do to keep your bathroom healthy and mold-free:
- Clean drains often: You can easily do this by pouring some baking soda into the drain, followed by white vinegar. Let it bubble for a few minutes, then flush with hot water.
- Repair the grout once a year to address cracks or damage where mold can grow.
- Replace caulk around the tub and sink that is cracked or breaking away.

A Bathroom Ventilation Success Story

A coworker, Rela C., shared her story about fixing a mold problem in her bathroom:
“During a routine cleaning, I noticed dark spots in the corners of our bathroom ceiling. Initially, I dismissed them as water stains, but a visiting family member identified them as mold. After consulting a contractor, we discovered the problem was poor ventilation. Simply opening a window wasn’t enough to control the moisture.
We fixed the problem in three steps:
- First, we cleaned all the moldy areas with special cleaning products.
- Then, we painted the ceiling with paint that fights mold.
- Finally, we put in a good bathroom fan.
This taught us something important: You really need good airflow in your bathroom to stop mold since bathrooms get very wet and steamy.”
