How Far Should Your Coffee Table Be from Your Couch?

So you have a new coffee table and are wondering how far to place it from your couch. If the gap between them is small, the space looks cluttered. If there is too much space between them, the table becomes impractical. While the usual rule of thumb is to leave 16-18 inches between them, there are situations where that may not be ideal.

This article will help you find the amount of space to leave between your couch and coffee table.

The Rule of Thumb

The rule of thumb suggests that the distance between the edge of the coffee table and the front of the couch is about 18 inches.

Interior stylist Mellisa Denham says the same — “The ideal length to leave between a sofa and a coffee table is between 16 to 18 inches.”

This distance is suggested by many because it gives enough space to stand up and walk around. One can easily pick the items from the coffee table while sitting on the couch. In some instances, especially for larger living rooms or those with sectional sofas, the distance may increase up to 24 inches.

With Sectional Sofas

Sectional sofas need more space since people sit on different sides. If your room is small, an 18-inch space between the coffee table and couch may only be possible for some sides. Allow 18 inches on the side where guests are likely to sit first.

If ample space is available, measure the distance between the sections of your sectional and place the coffee table in the middle.

Things to Check Before You Fix the Position of Your Coffee Table

If you are not considering the rule of thumb and still want to find the perfect place for your coffee table, consider the following. Sit on your couch and find a spot where you can easily pick things up without moving your sitting position. That’s where your coffee table is likely to be placed.

Comfortable Legroom

Imagine a situation where you’re sitting on a couch and your legs do not have enough space to rest—feeling uncomfortable, right? Leave 12 to 18 inches between the front of the couch and the coffee table. This distance makes the sitting experience comfortable, even for taller guests.

Traffic Flow

Think about how people move through the room. You want the coffee table close enough to the couch for easy access but not so far that it creates an awkward space. Ensure it keeps all main pathways open and inviting, especially walkways and doorways.
